Morgane Ji powerfully embodies the fusion of multiple origins, a reflection of her native island of Réunion, where cultural diversity runs deep.
She is one of the 2,000 former child wards who were relocated from Réunion to mainland France during the dark chapter of history known as the "Children of the Creuse."
With a volcanic temperament and mysterious roots — African, Indian, and Asian — she draws from a uniquely rich heritage.
Dubbed the "Creole Queen" by the British press, Morgane Ji began her stage career performing on university campuses in Norwich, East London, at Camden’s Jazz Café, and at the Pavilion Theater in Brighton.
Since then, she has performed across the globe — in Australia, Portugal, Colombia, Spain, Morocco, the Czech Republic, Italy... even Siberia!
Morgane Ji thrives on being where no one expects her to be — and that is her greatest strength.
A composer, banjo player, filmmaker, painter, and photographer,
the artist behind “Woman Soldier” is hyper-creative and has been diagnosed with Asperger’s autism. Her approach blends dreamlike visual and sonic worlds into a singular, inseparable experience.
As for her style and aesthetic, if you’re looking for a label — no one has successfully put her in a pigeonhole.
A pop-rock alien in her homeland, an electronic world music UFO abroad.
Her signature sound is unmistakable: a polymorphic, raw, soft, animalistic voice that defines her music.
Mystical and warrior-like by nature, she weaves her electric banjo through powerful technoid drum’n’bass beats and hypnotic slide guitar riffs using a bottleneck.
Presented in 15 countries worldwide, “Woman Soldier” — the title of her album — stands as a symbol of the fighting spirit of an independent female artist, paying tribute to the daily battles and strength of women around the world.
